The Laing Middle School Band Program established a national reputation in 1995-96 when the Symphonic Band performed at the prestigious Midwest International Band and Orchestra Convention under the direction of Miller Asbill. Since that time, the ensemble has received superior and excellent ratings at concert festivals on the state and national level.

The ensemble has traveled for many years to the Dixie Classics Festival (1994, 1998, 2000) or the National Adjucators Invitational (NAI, 1995, 1997). Under the direction of Mr. Asbill, the 1994-1995 Symphonic Band received the Festival Honor Award at Dixie Classics and NAI. Most recently, the 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 Symphonic Bands, under the direction of Christina Schneider, received Superior Rating Awards at the state concert festival. They also earned the Outstanding Woodwind Section Award at the 2000 Dixie Classics Festival in Virginia Beach. Festival clinicians were pleased with the individual students' technical and musical ability as well as their attention to instrumental and ensemble tone quality.
