What is SVC (Single Volunteers of Charleston)?
What it's not is a dating service. Rather, it is a chance for single people of all ages to make connections with other people in the area while also helping to make the community a better place.
Why SVC?
I came across a web-site for the national organization ( www.singlevolunteers.org ) and it sounded a lot like something I've wanted to do for a couple reasons. I enjoy volunteer work and am fully aware of the numerous unmet needs out there. With the shortage of funding for non-profits, it can be hard to gather and monitor a group of volunteers. However, there are also needs that do not come through an already formed agency. This is a chance to let our group know of needs in your community, church, or family.
Also, I moved out here alone several months ago. As a single person, I have more time to volunteer without the commitments of family. Why all ages? Part of the motivation for that is my mother. She's a 51-year-old widow who spent 10 years taking care of my dad at home before he died of cancer. Lately, she's been asking herself - what do I do now? That's why I want to encourage people of all ages and situations to become involved.
Will we always work in a big group?
Not necessarily. This depends on schedules and how many people are needed for a project. I am aiming for activities where five or more people from our group are needed, but there may be opportunities where only one or two people are needed. If that doesn't interest you, just let me know when you fill out your volunteer form.
How long do I have to commit? How much time will this take?
The answer to both of these is - whatever you tell me. Basically, if we have a Saturday event planned that goes from 9:00am-5:00pm for a month and you can help twice from 1:00pm-5:00pm, that's great. I only ask that you show up when you say you will or give as much notice as possible if you can't make it. However, I also expect we will have involvement with longer-term projects, but that does not mean you are obligated to join.
What kind of projects will we do?
Anything and everything. A few things I've been thinking of are Habitat for Humanity, First Night Charleston, and the Lowcountry Food Bank. But, there are many more out there. I also want to hear your ideas and creativity.
For example, an organization may need assistance stuffing envelopes. And you also know there a couple lonely people in a nursing home who would like some visitors. Why not do both? Think about it - you're helping the nonprofit, you are spending time with someone who needs it, and the person you visit has some company and a chance to help out too. Everyone wins!!
